These topics relate to the direct care of our aging population. The training will be facilitated by E. Ayn Welleford, MSG, PhD and Chair of the VCU Department of Gerontology.
This training is approved by the Department of Social Services and credits are accepted by the Department of Health Professions, Board of Long-Term Care Administrators toward annual training hours for Administrator licensure.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Describe 4 roles that ALF’s and staff can assume in the lives of residents families.
Demonstrate constructive interaction techniques.
Discuss how to respond to family needs and preferences.
Examine how various family programming strategies could be incorporated into the participants workplace.
WORKING WITH FAMILIES: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
List four skills involved in the staff communication process.
Discuss the benefits of skillful observation and documentation for caregivers and clients.
State what types of information are needed in a complete nursing note.
Describe appropriate uses of validation and reality orientation.
MENTAL HEALTH PATRT I: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Review major depression and minor depressive symptoms: causes, medications, interventions. Differentiate between depression and dementia.
Discuss relationship between depression and suicide
Review Bipolar disorder. Discuss the possible strategies/interventions when working with depressed adults.
Review the different types of anxiety and its manifestations of anxious symptoms between younger adults and older adults: causes, medications, interventions.
Discuss the association between anxiety & depression.
Discuss the possible strategies/interventions when working with anxious adults.

Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases Research Award Fund, 2012-2013
The Virginia Center on Aging (VCoA) administers the Alzheimer´s and Related Diseases Research Award Fund, which provides seed money to researchers in Virginia to stimulate innovative research into biomedical and psychosocial aspects of dementia, including cell biology, caregiving, and animal modeling.

Press Release for Dementia State Plan
A new report from the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission calls on the Commonwealth to improve coordination of state services to help serve the growing numbers of those with dementia in Virginia. Read the commission’s report, “Dementia State Plan: Virginia’s Response to the Needs of Individuals with Dementia and their Caregivers.”
