<p>This 7 contact hour interactive training targets Assisted Living Administrators with a comprehensive analysis of topics related to:</p>
<p>Mental Health Part I<br />
Working with Families<br />
Essential Skills </p>
<p>These topics relate to the direct care of our aging population.  The training will be facilitated by E. Ayn Welleford, MSG, PhD and Chair of the VCU Department of Gerontology.</p>
<p>This training is approved by the Department of Social Services and credits are accepted by the Department of Health Professions, Board of Long-Term Care Administrators toward annual training hours for Administrator licensure.  </p>

<p>Learning Objectives</p>
<p>ESSENTIAL SKILLS: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:<br />
Describe 4 roles that ALF&#8217;s and staff can assume in the lives of residents families.<br />
Demonstrate constructive interaction techniques.<br />
Discuss how to respond to family needs and preferences.<br />
Examine how various family programming strategies could be incorporated into the participants workplace.</p>
<p>WORKING WITH FAMILIES: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:<br />
List four skills involved in the staff communication process.<br />
Discuss the benefits of skillful observation and documentation for caregivers and clients.<br />
State what types of information are needed in a complete nursing note.<br />
Describe appropriate uses of validation and reality orientation. </p>
<p>MENTAL HEALTH PATRT I: At the end of this training, participants will be able to:<br />
Review major depression and minor depressive symptoms: causes, medications, interventions. Differentiate between depression and dementia.<br />
Discuss relationship between depression and suicide<br />
Review Bipolar disorder. Discuss the possible strategies/interventions when working with depressed adults.<br />
Review the different types of anxiety and its manifestations of anxious symptoms between younger adults and older adults: causes, medications, interventions.<br />
Discuss the association between anxiety &#038; depression.<br />
Discuss the possible strategies/interventions when working with anxious adults.</p>
