The American Psychological Association , in partnership with the U.S. Administration on Aging, will hold a webinar to explore the mental health needs of family caregivers and effective interventions and resources to support those needs.

Assisted Living Administrator Virginia regulatory Exam Preparatory Course

As you are aware, the Department of Health Professions recently passed regulations that require Administrators of Assisted Living Facilities to be licensed. The requirements for the licensure will include passing an exam on the domains of practice as set forth by the National Association of Boards of Examiners of Long Term Care Administrators (NAB).

VCU Department of Gerontology wants to help you, as a current administrator, prepare for this exam.

Thank you, Dr. Welleford! Welcome Dr. Slattum!

On June 14, 2011, at the last meeting of the Virginia Commission on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, we bad farewell to Dr. E. Ayn Welleford, Immediate Past Chair of the commission (whose term on the Commmission ends at the end of this month) and welcomed Dr. Patricia Slattum as the new Chair.
Review both of our commission’s leaders bios below: 

E.  Ayn Welleford, MSG, PhD, received her BA in Management/Psychology from Averett College, MS in Gerontology and PhD in Developmental Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has taught extensively in the areas of Lifespan Development, and Adult Development and Aging, Geropsychology, and Aging & Human Values. As an educator, researcher, and previously as a practitioner she has worked with a broad spectrum of individuals across the caregiving and long term care continuum. As Associate Professor and Chair of VCU’s Department of Gerontology, she currently works to “Improve Elder Care through Education” through her Teaching, Scholarship, and Community Engagement.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Welleford provides community education and serves on several boards and committees.  She currently serves as Chair of the Governor’s Commonwealth of Virginia Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Commission. Dr. Welleford is the proud recipient of the 2008 AGHE Distinguished Teacher Award.

Patricia W. Slattum, PharmD, PhD is Associate Professor, Director of the Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Program, and Vice-Chair for Graduate Studies in the Department of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Slattums teaching, research and practice interests are improving pharmacotherapy for older adults residing in the community and assisted-living facilities, the effects of medications on cognition, and medication management in Alzheimers disease. She partners with a pharmacy located in a large retirement community to develop pharmacy practice models to provide care to seniors. She received the 2005 Innovative Practice Award from the Virginia Pharmacists Association.
Dr. Slattum is a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Alzheimers and Related Disorders Commission. She was recognized as the 2005 Teacher of the Year by the VCU School of Pharmacy and the 2005 Gerontology Educator of the Year by the Virginia Association on Aging. She is the 2008 recipient of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics William Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology. She receives grant support for her research from the Alzheimers Association, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the pharmaceutical industry. She received her B.S. in Pharmacy, Certificate in Aging Studies, Pharm.D. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from VCU. She completed an NIH postdoctoral traineeship in drug disposition and aging at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
